We’re plased to announce today that TASC has received a two-year, $400,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation. The grant will help TASC implement our expanded learning time “whole school” model in five ExpandED Schools—public elementary and middle schools that work with TASC to expand the time and ways students learn—in Brooklyn and Manhattan, serving approximately 1,900 students.
“The funding we received from the New York Life Foundation supports our mission of helping to give all kids expanded learning opportunities that support, educate and inspire them,” TASC President Lucy N. Friedman said. “The most disadvantaged kids in this country have the fewest opportunities to keep learning when the conventional school day and year end. We are dedicated to reversing that inequality and giving every student a fighting chance to succeed, and the New York Life Foundation is helping us get closer to our goal.”
“We partnered with TASC because they are dedicated to closing opportunity and achievement gaps by providing a framework for educators and communities to reinvent the school day,” said Marlyn Torres, senior program officer of the New York Life Foundation. “Like TASC, we want more kids to have the opportunity to learn beyond traditional school hours by participating in enriching learning experiences that also help working families.”
New York Life Foundation’s previous grant of $400,000 in 2010 supported a pilot that enabled TASC to convert one of the ExpandED Schools sites to a “whole school” model site, where all the students attending that school participated in the expanded learning time program, including those students with special needs. TASC provides ExpandED Schools with funding, professional development, and technical assistance to build an active, balanced learning day that gives students approximately 35 percent more learning time (nearly three more hours) a day at an additional cost of only 10 percent.
The grant will support these schools and their community partners in Brooklyn and Manhattan: P.S. 89–Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation; P.S. 186–NIA Community Services Network; Young Scholars’ Academy for Discovery and Exploration–University Settlement; P.S. 188–Educational Alliance and Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School–Abyssinian Development Corporation.
