Best Part of Back to School

Susan BrennaKids in Baltimore and New Orleans ExpandED Schools have been back to school for days or weeks. Tomorrow, it’s New York City students’ turn. We’re sharing back-to-school memories from around the office. Anything sound familiar?

“I loved shopping for fresh new pens and pencils and assigning different color notebooks and folders to each subject. I always chose blue for English,” says Research Associate Yvonne Wang.

More school supply euphoria comes from Jennifer Siaca Curry, our National Technical Assistance Manager. “My favorite thing about going back to school was getting fresh supplies – sharp pencils, new glue sticks and a clean Trapper Keeper.”

Staying with the shopping theme, Training Coordinator Sunset Harris says, “I was always super-excited about going back to school because of back-to-school shopping. To me that meant a brand new, cool, pink Barbie book bag and some awesome light-up Barbie sneakers.”

Development Officer Noella Scott remembers her 3rd grade first-day-of-school outfit: pink denim skirt, turquoise top, yellow necklace. Tropical!

ExpandED Schools Program Specialist Cynthia Malave (pictured), says, “We wore uniforms in Puerto Rico’s public schools. I was so excited about the first day of second grade that I wore my uniform to bed” the night before.

We wish NYC kids all the hope and optimism that Cynthia brought to school with her, and none of the wrinkles.
