On Monday, the U.S. Department of Education recognized 24 organizations from across the country as exemplars of school-community partnerships working together to turn around low-performing schools. The organizations are winners of the “Together for Tomorrow” challenge, an approach to coordinate efforts of the U.S. Department of Education and the Corporation for National Community Service. Seven Together for Tomorrow demonstration sites were also recognized.
As U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, according to the press release, “the Department’s investments and the work of schools and districts are only part of the solution…Our schools need community engagement to support and sustain school improvement.”
We couldn’t agree more—we’ve seen the power of AmeriCorps service members to transform school culture and add to the faculty of a school to personalize learning and provide more opportunities for mentorship. Kudos to these organizations and demonstration sites, and keep up the good work strengthening partnerships.
